Will Rafael Mendes break the record of holding the most titles at featherweight? Will Keenan Cornelius or JT Torres become the 3rd non-Brazilian to win Gold at the black belt level? Our pick: This division has a couple of favorites. But after watching last Copa Podio, we have to go with Victor Honorio.

BLACK BELTS

For the Black Belts we will look also look at the Brackets. There are a couple of Superstars missing (Rodolfo, Pena, Gui Mendes, Satoshi, Galvao. Barral, Braulio and Caio Terra). That means that there will be no returning champion for the light-feather, Medium Heavy, Heavy and Super Heavy Division. And Since Leandro Lo moved to Medium Heavy, there will be 5 new World Champions this year! This year there is a 50 points criteria for the Black Belts. So the divisions are a little bit thinner then usual.

Rooster:   Semi-Finals: Jorge Elias (ECU)| Alliance International- versus Bruno Malfacine (BRA)-Alliance   Joao Miyao (BRA)-PSLPB Cicero Costha versus Ivaniel de Oliviera (BRA)- CheckMat   This division will see a final between: Joao Miyao (BRA)-PSLPB Cicero Costha versus Bruno Malfacine (BRA)-Alliance   Our pick: this one is really tough to pick. Sometimes the Miyao’s do not have the best Strategy. Bruno with all his experience certainly has an advantage. But is Bruno still as hungry as Joao Miyao to become a world champion. Another advantage for Joao is that he stayed much more active during the year. This really is a tossup.

Black Belt Light-Feather   Semi Finals: Paulo Miyao (BRA)-PLSPB Cicero Costha versus Carlos Holanda (BRA)-CheckMat Thomas Lisboa (BRA)- Alliance versus Tiago Barros (BRA)-PLSPB Cicero Costha Final: Paulo Miyao (BRA)- PLSPB Cicero Costha versus Tiago Barros (BRA)- PLSPB Cicero Costha   Our pick: Closeout between teammates and Paulo Miyao will be the new Light Feather World Champion

Black Belt Feather Semi Finals: Rafael Mendes (BRA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu versus Mario Reis (BRA)- Alliance Rubens Charles Maciel (BRA)- Alliance versus Gianni Grippo (USA)- Alliance Final: Rafael Mendes (BRA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu versus Rubens Charles Maciel (BRA)- Alliance Our pick: This is always a close one. Last year Rafael got mount on Cobrinha but it happened out of bounds and they had to restart on their feet again. Rafa won 10-8 on points. We expect Rafa to work again on the lapel guards and the 50-50 guard. We expect Rafa to win. We hope to see this year some more action instead of a slow paced 50-50 battle.

Black Belt Light   Semi Finals: Lucas Lepri (BRA)- Alliance versus Gabriel Rollo (BRA)- CheckMat Michael Langhi (BRA)-Alliance versus Jonathan Torres (USA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu Final: Lucas Lepri (BRA)- Alliance versus Jonathan Torres (USA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu   Our pick: JT Torres is looking better each year. But Lepri is still really good. We expect JT Torres to become the 3rd American World Champion.

Black Middle: Leandro Lo moved up in weight so it will be interesting to see who will take it this year. Semi Finals: Claudio Calasans (BRA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu versus Victor Estima (BRA)- Gracie Barra Otavio Sousa (BRA)-Gracie Barra versus Vitor Oliveira (BRA)- GF Team   These will be the most likely match ups. However, Murilo Santana might be able to beat Victor Estima and Francisco Iturralde might be able to beat Otavio Sousa again.   Final: Otavio Sousa (BRA)- Gracie Barra versus Victor Estima (BRA)- Gracie Barra Our pick: This will be a Closeout. We expect Otavio to get the title bases on seniority.

Black Medium Heavy:   Semi Finals: Tarsis Humphreys (BRA)- Aliance versus Gustavo Campos (BR)- Atos Jiu Jitsu Leandro Lo (BRA)- PLSPB Cicero Costha versus Thiago Sá (BRA) – CheckMat   Final: Gustavo Campos (BRA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu versus Leandro Lo (BRA)- PLSPB Cicero Costha Our pick: Leandro will take the gold. Without Galvao, Keenan Barral and Braulio competing, we do not see anyone stopping Leandro Lo. Black Heavy: It will be hard to beat CheckMat in this division. With Felipe Pena not competing the only person who could be able to prevent CheckMat from getting the win is Alexandre Ribeiro. However Keenan Cornelius moved up when Leandro moved up. Or was it the other way around? Keenan Cornelius has a record of beating the CheckMat athletes (Jackson, Leite, and Arnaldo Maidana). Semi Finals: Alexandre Ribeiro (BRA)- Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu versus Jackson Sousa (BRA)- CheckMat Lucas Leite (BRA)- CheckMat versus Keenan Cornelius (USA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu   Final: This one is tough to predict. It will be either Jackson Sousa (Bra)- CheckMat vs Keenan Cornelius (USA)- Atos Jiu Jitsu or versus Lucas Leite (BRA)- CheckMat. Our Prediction is Close out between Lucas Leite and Jackson Sousa.

Black Super Heavy:   Semi Finals: Bernardo Faria (BRA)- Alliance versus Igor Silva (BRA)- GF Team Yuri Simões (BRA)- Brasa CTA versus Erberth Santos (BRA) Guigo BJJ   Finals: Bernardo Faria (BRA)- Alliance versus Yuri Simões (BRA)- Brasa CTA   Our pick: Bernardo Faria. Bernardo had an awesome performance on the Pan American Championships where he took double gold. So we have to go with him.

Black Ultra Heavy: Semi Finals: Marcus Almeida (BRA)- CheckMat versus Ricardo Evangelista (BRA)- Gf Team Gabriel Lucas (BRA)-CheckMat versus Alexander Trans (BRA) – UAE Jiu Jitsu Team Final: Marcus Almeida (BRA)- CheckMat versus Alexander Trans (BRA)- UAe Jiu Jitsu Team Our pick: We cannot bet against Buchecha. This worlds he will write history by becoming the first BJJ athlete to become a 4-time weight and open weight Champion.
