Three amazing acai recipes

Geplaatst in: acai, bjj, bjjamsterdam, brazilianjiujitsu

For a lot of people that train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it becomes more than just a sport. It becomes a lifestyle, and part of the BJJ lifestyle is to eat good. A popular meal amongst Jiu Jitsu people is the acai bowl.

So what is acai? Acai is a purple berry that comes from the acai palm tree. It is mostly native to the Amazon region of Brazil. After being harvested, the acai berries are smashed to a pulp and frozen into ice packs. In recent years it has become popular outside of Brazil too. It got famous as a superfood for its high concentration of antioxidants. We could go on about the various health benefits of the berry and how your BJJ skills will improve significantly after each bowl, but why we really like this amazing superfood is simply because of its unique and delicious taste.

“Want to be as good as the Mendes bros? Then start eating acai.”

Acai bowls are a tasty way to the begin the day with, or in the afternoon as some quick fuel before you go to your BJJ training. A typical bowl is a blended, thick smoothie consistency, almost ice cream like and topped with granola, various nuts, and fruits. The variations with toppings are endless. So, how do you make these bowls?

For our acai bowls, we like to use our favourite, high quality and rich in flavour acai packs from Ataste. For your convenience, we have them now available at the Academy. Check out these three awesome recipes that you will improve your guard:

The classic Acai bowl:

The classic bowl is the most common bowl that you can find and it is a favorite amongst many BJJ practitioners. At BJJ tournaments they mostly serve this bowl.

  • 2-3 Frozen acai packs
  • 50 – 150 ml Coconut water
  • 2 bananas
  • Granola/oats

  1. Start by cutting the acai packs in half and pinch them out of the packing into your blender. If the motor of your blender is not so strong, then you can break the frozen acai packs one more time. Two acai packs are enough for one bowl. However, if you want a stronger taste and a bit more texture then you can put in 3 acai packs.
  2. Throw a banana (without the skin) in the blender. Pour in the coconut water, this step you can do according to your own preference. If you pour in more coconut water, the bowl will be more smoothie like and if you use just a little bit of coconut water it will be more like an ice cream bowl. Turn on the blender and watch the ingredients become a nice smoothie/ice cream consistency.
  3. Scoop out the acai mix in a bowl, top it with sliced bananas and granola/oatmeal.
  4. Enjoy your bowl.

The Tropical bowl

The tropical bowl is a nice colourful bowl with a lot of fruit. You can also use frozen fruits from the supermarket for the toppings.

  • 2-3 Frozen acai packs
  • 50 – 150 ml Orange juice
  • 2 bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • 1 peeled Mango
  • 1 peeled Kiwi
  • 1 teaspoon of bee pollen
  • Granola/oats
  • Coconut flakes
  • Honey/Maple syrup (optional)

  1. Start with making the acai base. So, start by cutting the frozen packs in half and put them in the blender together with 1 banana and a few blueberries. For the tropical bowl, we like to use orange juice to dilute the blend. This gives a sweet, fruity flavor to the blend. How much orange juice should you use? Again, it depends on your taste and preference for the consistency of the blend. More orange juice for a sweeter and smoothie like blend and less if you want more of an ice cream bowl.
  2. Scoop the blend in your bowl and start adding the toppings. You can cut the bananas in slices, the strawberries in half, and the mango and kiwi in chunks. Try to be creative when you top the bowl with the fruits and make it an artwork. For the finishing touch add the granola, coconut flakes and then finish with honey or maple syrup.
  3. Here you have a nice colorful acai bowl with a lot of fruit to get your daily dose of vitamins.

The Cacao-nut bowl

The cacao-nut bowl is packed with proteins and has a slight chocolate flavour.

  • 2-3 Frozen acai packs
  • 50 – 150 ml  Almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon of raw cacao
  • 2 Bananas
  • Almonds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Granola/oats
  • Almond butter or Peanut butter
  • Honey/Maple syrup

  1. Prepare with making the blend (you should be an expert by now). For this blend, we will add 1 tablespoon of raw cacao to the mix. Why raw? Because it sounds more hip and healthier (regular cacao should be fine too). Add in the almond milk and start blending the mixture.
  2. For the toppings: start with the sliced banana, then add in the almonds and granola. Now, add some chia seeds and hemp seeds on top, which are incredibly nutritious as it contains magnesium, potassium, zinc and they are also a nice source of plant-based proteins.
  3. For the finishing touch, put a scoop of almond butter (or peanut butter) on top and drizzle the bowl with honey or maple syrup.

So here you have our three favourite acai recipes. Close your eyes and imagine that you are on the beach, then take a big scoop of your acai bowl. Enjoy them before or after training! Show us your creation on Instagram with #bjjaa #ataste.
