Last month we had a busy competition month. Students of BJJAA were competing every weekend and as a result of our training sessions, the consistent hard work and dedication of our students, all tournaments have resulted in a generous amount of medals. Let’s look back at May and recap all the events.
Belgium Nationals (May 6th)
The Belgium Nationals in the small village of Meeuwen-Geertruide, Belgium was the first tournament of the month. We had only two people of the team signed up. Daniel and Ales were eager to test their skills in Belgium. The results: Ales got bronze in a division with 24 competitors. Daniel won his division and secured a gold medal and a free ticket to the NAGA Germany!
Ales – Bronze: white belt – 76 kg division
Daniel – Gold: blue belt – 70 kg division
EGFFJ Open (May 13th)
The first edition of this new tournament was held in Den Bosch. We had seven people from our team signed up. Everyone fought hard and most of us were able to make it to the podium. At the tournament, legend of the sport Rickson Gracie was present and awarded several competitors of our team the winning medal. Ales got gold in his division and got to battle in the open weight division as well, where had some tough battles and ended up taking bronze in the open weight. Another bronze went to Sherif in the blue belt division, showing some very sharp and technical skills in all of his fights.
Sajil got on top of the podium in his division and went home with silver in the open weight. Coaches Kiren and Remo cruised steadily through their own divisions and both won gold. With such a small amount of competitors, it’s great to see we placed 2nd best team overall. We definitely were nr. 1 in the medal/competitors ratio. Thanks to everyone’s effort we managed to have another successful tournament.
Ales – Gold & Bronze: white belt – 76 kg division & open weight
Sherif – Bronze – Blue belt: -82.3 kg division
Sajil – Gold & Silver: blue belt -88.3 kg division & open weight

Remo – Gold – Purple belt: -100,5 kg division
Den Haag BJJ Open & Grappling Open (May 21st)
This tournament in Rijswijk had BJJ division and Grappling/nogi division scheduled. The women’s division was very well represented with three women from our team. All of them had great results: Sylwunia fought two matches. She won one match by points and submitted her opponent with a triangle in the other match. This made her the champion of the division. A wonderful result considering she just rehabilitated from an ACL surgery!
Sophia and Elizabete both fought in the blue belt division. Sophia initially lost her first match, but got the chance for a rematch due to a fall-out of one of the other competitors. This time, she was victorious, placing her 2nd in the division. Elizabete fought two matches against opponents far bigger than her. Nevertheless, she beat both of them by points – one by 22-0 – thereby securing the gold in the women’s blue belt division.
Simon made his competition debut in the men +94 kg white belt division. He encountered a loss at first, but had a win in the repechage bracket and placed 3d in his division. A great result for a first time competitor. Recently joined blue belts of the team, Sherif and Shakib had an amazing result by winning all of their matches in the blue belt division, resulting in gold for both of them. Daan showed some steady technique in the blue belt +94.3 division, also placing first. Dario had two fights in the purple belt division – winning the first one but lost the second, getting silver in the purple belt -80kg division.
The afternoon was reserved for grappling. Both Daniel and Daan signed up for the advanced division. Daniel won all his matches and submitted his opponent in the final within a minute. Showcasing that with a strong BJJ background you can be successful in the nogi scene as well.

That concluded the busy competition month May. Some great results achieved as individuals, but made possible by training together. Win or loss, stepping on the mat is an achievement in itself. Well done everyone who went out there and gave it their best. Let’s keep up the good work!
